The Best Ergonomic Crochet Hooks for Carpal Tunnel & Arthritis

July 22, 2018 by Amanda

When I’m working on a crochet project I have to take many breaks to make sure my carpal tunnel doesn’t flare up and cause pain. I also switched to using ergonomic crochet hooks while crocheting so I don’t have to worry about this issue. While I started out with the most basic crochet hooks, I quickly found that using them for any length of time would cause discomfort.

If you’re looking for crochet hooks you can use for long projects that span many hours, you are in the right place. I’ve gathered some of the best (and cutest) ergonomic crochet hooks out there. Each one offers something a little different so you’ll want to compare and potentially even purchase multiple styles to find the right fit for you.

Best Ergonomic Crochet Hooks & Hook Sets

Ergonomic crochet hooks will make your life better and your next project easier! Below are some of our favorite crochet hooks. This post contains affiliate links that mean at no extra cost to you this site will make a commission.

These Clover Armour crochet hooks ten to be at the top of every list for ergonomic crochet hooks and they are my personal favorite as well. They come with easy grip handles and optimal hook shape. The soft grip is warm to the touch and creates a comfortable finger placement for long term use.

The optimal hook shape is a aluminum that is perfect for smooth and easy crocheting. This ergonomic crochet hook set comes in bright and fun colors with each different size represented by a different color handle which helps you easily remember which hook to use for a project.  The sizes are B-2.25mm, C-2.75mm, D-3.25mm, E-3.50mm, F-3.75mm, G-4.00mm, 7-4.50mm, H-5.00mm, I-5.50mm, and J-6.00mm.

How to Choose the Right Crochet Hook

After reading about so many great ergonomic crochet hook options you may be wondering how to choose the right one for your situation. Unfortunately there is no easy option or way to decide.

As most crochet experts will tell you, there is no perfect crochet hook out there. What works for some people is an annoyance to others. You’ll have to do some testing to see which suits your needs best. This will depend on your grip, the type of material you like to feel, and even what size hook you need for a project.

Luckily most of these crochet hooks, even the sets with multiples, are affordable. Many are at or under $20 which makes it easier to try out multiple types of hooks. If you are friends with others who crochet then you can swap out hooks and try more without spending a ton of money.

Different Crochet Hook Types

One thing to consider is the different types of crochet hooks based on the materials they are made out of like bamboo, steel, or aluminum.

Bamboo crochet hooks are lightweight. They feel comfortable in the hand. They are also very affordable because they are made from a renewable resource.

Steel crochet hooks have the smallest hook sizes so these might be the best bet for certain projects where you will be doing fine thread crocheting.

Aluminum crochet hooks are very popular among beginners. These are the hooks most people start with because yarn slides so easily and this enables you to crochet easily and quickly. They come in a range of sizes which allows a wide range of projects to start.

Plastic hooks are also a great option for a variety of sizes and they work very well with bulky yarn. These are also lightweight since most are made from hollow plastic.

Ergonomic crochet hooks will also feature larger handles usually made with a soft material. These ergonomically designed crochet hooks make the art easier on your hands and are the best choice if you plan to crochet for any length of time.

What to Look for in an Ergonomic Crochet Hooks

Not sure how to choose between all these awesome ergonomic crochet hook options? Here’s some of the things you will want to look for in your crochet hooks:

  • Sizes. You’ll find a variety of crochet hook sizes and these will help you tackle a variety of projects. You will most likely switch between sizes depending on what your pattern calls for so it’s important to make sure you get multiple sizes. This is why many people like to purchase a complete ergonomic crochet hook set.
  • Ergonomic grip. As you can see from the list above, there are a couple options for ergonomic grips on crochet hooks. This makes the hooks easier to hold and stops your hand from feeling pain after prolonged use. You may also want to purchase the hooks with a soft grip if you want hooks that are easier to hang onto.
  • Organizer case. Personally I like to find crochet hook sets that come with their own case. Since I end up owning multiple sets in different styles of hooks it’s nice to have them all organized together in one place.

Those are a few thoughts on what I personally look for in my crochet hooks. You’ll find that everyone is a little bit different in what they want which is why there are so many great ergonomic hook options these days!

Remember that heated wrist wraps are not a solution to carpal tunnel and are simply a home remedy. There are many sources of wrist pain and some can be serious conditions that require medical treatments. Seek medical advice from a doctor if you have ongoing pain and health problems.

Why Use Heat For Wrist Pain?

Most people with muscle pain know that heating pads are an essential tool for pain relief because the heat penetrates sore muscles to soothe. Heat therapy works by improving the circulation and blood flow in the area due to increased temperature from the heat wrap. This soothes the discomfort from pain and helps relax.

Moist heat like the kind used in this style of wrist therapy wrap can be a more effective option than dry heat. It’s very beneficial when used for a longer period of time like 15 to 30 minutes. This amount of time can help wash aways stiffness, tension, and moderate pain.

Why Use Cold For Wrist Pain?

Cold therapy works in a similar manner but by doing the opposite – reducing blood flow to the affected area. This reduced blood flow helps reduce inflammation that causes swelling and pain which is especially helpful around a joint that is inflamed. Cold can also help reduce nerve activity which relieves pain.

You should remember that cold therapy should not be used for long periods of time. Use it in short bursts of time less than 15 minutes so you don’t overuse and cause damage.

These heat pack wrist warmers are a fantastic gift idea for people with carpal tunnel or those who suffer from arthritis symptoms in their hands.
